應該是by bus還是on the bus?

問：I came here by the local bus.
有人告訴我這個句子有錯誤, 不知錯在何處?

答：當籠統地指交通工具時, 可以使用by, 並且表示交通工具的名詞前不用冠詞, 例如 by train (乘火車), by bus (乘公共汽車), by car(乘小汽車), by ship (乘船), by bike (騎自行車) 等等。但是, 當指某個具體的交通工具時, 則通常不使用介係詞by, 而且表示交通工具的名詞之前要使用冠詞:

1. I saw him on the bus.
   我在公共汽車上看到了他。
2. [Barbary was working at the Slade,] where she went daily in a bus.
   …她每天乘公共汽車去那裡。
3. Next day I was off to Birmingham in a train.
   第二天我乘火車去伯明罕。
4. You won’t go far on that old bike.
   你騎那輛舊自行車是走不遠的。
5. We only managed to get there in time by begging a lift in a neighbour’s car.
   我們只因為搭乘了鄰居的汽車才準時趕到了那裡。

[附注] 當指某個具體的交通工具時, 並不是絕對地不可使用by, 而且, 在使用by 時, 如果名詞之前無修飾語的話, 也不一定非省略冠詞不可。如果表示交通工具的名詞之前有修飾語的話, 則冠詞是不可缺少的。例如:

1. My friend and I returned to town by the midnight express train. (注意介係詞by 與具體的交通工具連用)
   我和我的朋友乘午夜的快車回到了城裡。
2. It’s easier to go to town by the bus (rather than by the train) (注意介係詞by 之後用了定冠詞)
   乘公共汽車(而不是乘火車) 進城比較方便。
3. by the last busy/by the 2 o’clock bus (注意具體的交通工具與by 連用)
   乘最後一班公共汽車/ 乘兩點的公共汽車
4. Father and son went to New York by a morning train.
   爸爸和兒子乘早晨的一趟火車去了紐約。
