majority 用法

問：(A) The majority are Moslems.
(B) The majority is always able to impose its will on the minority.
同是用majority 做主詞, 為什麼在句(A) 中用are, 而在句(B) 中用is?

答：majority 用法雖然在文法上是個單數名詞, 但在概念上卻具有複數的含義: most, almost all, many。因此, the majority of 一般與複數動詞連用:

1. The majority of doctors believe smoking is harmful to health.
   大多數醫生認為吸煙有害於健康。
2. But the majority were on Ben’s side.
   但是大多數人支持本。
3. The majority of children like sweets.
   大數孩子喜歡糖果。

下面句子裡的majority 使用單數動詞, 是因為human race 是單數的緣故。

The majority of the human race is still today on the sidelines, watching and wondering.
人類的大多數今天仍然不能參與競賽, 只在場外觀看、驚歎而已。

majority 後面不跟of 片語時, 其動詞可使用複數形式, 亦可使用單數形式。

1. The Democratic majority is composed of workers and shirkers.
   民主黨的大多數是由工人和逃避者所組成的。
2. The majority agrees with me.
   大多數人與我意見一致。

上面所提問的(B) 句便屬於這種情形。
