if…or not用法1：
問：初中英語課本上有這樣一個句子：
The cat saw the parrot and wanted to know if it was a bird or not.
但是我查了許多英語著作，都說if…or not的用法是錯誤的。不知究竟是怎麼回事？
答：下面先從美國的文法著作中摘引幾個例句：
- I don’t care if you come or not. (Understanding Grammar, New York, 1954, p:237)
- She asked me if I was going to the store (or not). (Grammar for Use, p 138)
英國語言家們也認為在動詞受詞子句中if….or not是規範的用法。英國著名文法學家 R. Quirk等人就會舉過這樣的例子：
- I don’t care if your car breaks down or not.

if…or not用法2：
問：當有的讀者問到 It would not make any difference to John if Richard came or not.這個句子是否正確時，《英語難題解答400則》的作者回答說：“……原句中的if用錯了，因為if用在這錯句裏的意義只有條件而沒有提問题”，而必须更改“it…whether…”（p.251）情况是否真的如此？
答：傳統文法學家是反對使用if…or not的。但是，這並不符合英語的實際使用情况。If…or not除可用在受詞子句（見上題）中之外，還可用在主詞從屬子句中：
It's still uncertain if (whether) he’s coming or not.
他是否來還不能肯定。
但是，當子句位於句首時，則只能使用 whether…or not，而不能使用 if…or not。
- Whether it rains or not doesn’t concern me.
- 【錯】 If it rains or not doesn’t concern me.下不下雨對我關係不大。
- Whether he’s coming or not is still uncertain.
- 【錯】if he’s coming or not is still uncertain.他來不來，還不能肯定。
