any 用法 1 (any vs any other 1)

問：我同意你在any men / any other men 條中所作的分析。但是我在New Concept English 中卻讀到過這樣兩個句子:

  1. He has been able to tell us more about active volcanoes than any man alive.
  2. For this reason, intelligent creatures in any part of the universe would be able to understand a simple arithmetical sequence.

答：從邏輯的嚴密性上來說, 上面的句子是有毛病的, 應分別改為any other man alive和any other par t, 因為從邏輯角度看any man alive 也包括he (Haroun Tazieff) 在內。因此, 考生應該只承認符合邏輯的表達方法: than any other, in any other。

any 用法 2 (any vs any other 2)

問：1979 年全國高考英語試題有一道正誤辨認題:
She is taller than any girl in the glass.
標準答案判上題為錯誤。正確句應為:
She is taller than any other girl in the class.
請問上面的試題真是個錯句嗎?

答：如果把試題中的She 理解為該班的一個女生, 則試題原句是個錯句, 因為它有明顯的邏輯錯誤: any girl in the class 也包括she 在內, 因而是無法進行比較的。但是, 如果把she 理解為一位女老師或其他班的一個女學生, 則上道題就是個正確的句子了。在沒有上下文提示的條件下, 考生有權這樣來理解。這說明上道試題是不嚴密的。如將in the class 改為in her class, 就可以避免上述弊病。(參見any men/ any other men)

any 用法 4 (any vs some 2)

問：Your suggestion does not advance the debate any. 請問這裡的any 是什麼意思?

答：在非正式英語中any 可用在否定句或疑問句中, 表示at all 的意思。上面的句子可以譯為: 你的建議根本不會使這個爭論有什麼進展。類似的例子: Your suggestion didn’t help them any. (你的建議對於他們根本沒有什麼幫助。) 在斷形容詞境中, some 具有相類似的用法, 意思是“有些”、“有點兒”:

  1. Your suggestion helps some.
    你的建議會有點兒幫助。
  2. The patient’s condition has improved some.
    病人的病情有些好轉。

any 用法 5 (any at all)

問：Any offer at all would be better than this.
請解釋這裡的at all 的含義。

答：用在any 及其複合詞之後的at all, 是用來加強any 的非斷形容詞氣的。Any offer at all would be better than this.意為: 任何建議, 如果有的話, 都會比這個好。”(即未斷定其存在) 。請看下面的例句:

  1. That Tyrant has few friends, if any at all.
    那個暴君就算有朋友的話, 也是很少的。(說話人的口氣, 並不認為他真的有朋友) 。
  2. very little, if any at all.
    就算有, 那也是很少的

any 用法 6 (any better vs some better)

問：This cake is delicious; but I can’t eat _______more.
A. any
B. some
C. no

從語感上我知道這裡應當選A (any), 但是我不能解釋為什麼不能選B (some) 。any 與some 的詞義在這裡是否有區別?

答：any 用法與some 在這裡的詞義並沒有什麼差別, 都作形容詞比較級的修飾語, 意為: “一些”。但是any + 形容詞比較級結構, 如同any 本身一樣, 是個非斷定詞項, 主要用於否定句、疑問句和條件句中。而some + 形容詞結構則是個斷定詞項, 主要用於肯定句中(見some / any) 。請比較下列各句:

  1. I couldn’t come any sooner.
    我不能到得再早了。
  2. It’s no use asking me. I don’t know any more than you do.
    問我沒有用。我跟你同樣不懂。
  3. I shall get pneumonia if I stay in this drought any longer.
    如果我再在這風口呆著的話, 非得肺炎不可。
  4. I’m feeling some better today, thanks.
    今天我感覺好些了, 多謝。

any 用法 7 (any men vs any other men)

問：Because of Thomas Edison, perhaps more than any men, scientific research has an established place in American society. (TOEFL)
請分析句中的錯誤。

答：雖然在中文裡可以聽到“他比任何人貢獻都大”。但是嚴格說來, 這是不合邏輯的, 因為“任何人”也包括“他”本人在內。英語裡也是如此, 在這種情況下要求使用than any other + 名詞。

  1. Iron is more useful than any other metal.
    鐵比其他金屬更有用。
  2. Monday is busier than any other day in a week.
    星期一要比其他日子忙一些。
  3. That movie was more interesting than any other I have seen recently.
    那個影片比我最近看過的其他片子有意思得多。

試題中的(B) any men 應改為any other men 。

any 用法 8 (any of…is/ are)

問：I don’t think any of my friends have seen them.
用作代名詞的any 顯然屬於單數範疇, 但其謂詞動詞為什麼用複數呢?

答：規定文法學派仍堅持在正式語體裡使用單數動詞。但是, 由於人們受接近原則(動詞靠近名詞複數)的影響, 也常常使用複數動詞。

any 用法 9 (any one vs anyone)

問：any one 與anyone 有什麼區別?

答：在any one 中, any 是形容詞, one 是數詞, 而anyone 是不定代名詞。any one 與anyone 在意義和用法上大致有如下區別:

A. anyone 只能用於指人, 而any one 既可用於指人, 也可用於指物:

  1. Did anyone call when I was out? 我不在的時候有人來過(來過電話) 嗎?
  2. Anyone can do that. 誰都可以做這件事。
  3. A. Do you know them all?
    B. I don’t know any one of them.
    A.你全都認識他們嗎?
    B.他們之中我一個也不認識。
  4. A. Which dictionary do you want?
    B. Any one will do.
    A.你要哪本辭典?
    B.哪一本都行。

B. 在anyone 與any one 指人時, anyone  具有泛指意義或整體意義, 而any one 則具有個體意義(含有數目意義)

  1. Anyone who is over sixteen is allowed in. 凡超過16 歲者都可入內。
  2. He can beat any one of you. 他能擊敗你們之中的任何一個人。

C. any one 可接of 片語, 而anyone 不可以接of 片語。

Any one of us is liable to fall ill. 我們之中的每個人都容易生病。

D. anyone 用於整體意義時, 與其有關的代名詞可採用複數形式(參見everybody…he / they) :

  1. Anyone can enter for the competition, can’t they? 任何人都可以參加競賽, 是不是?
  2. Has anyone brought their racket? 是不是每個人都帶來了球拍?

any 用法 11 (not anymore…than)

問：Rachel isn’t any more courageous than Saul (is).
請解釋not any more…than 的意義和用法。

答：not any more…than 是no more…than 的另一種說法, 是一種強調形式。故你問的句子可以譯為:

瑞吉兒和索爾一樣不勇敢(索爾不勇敢, 瑞吉兒也不勇敢) 。

請注意, 這個句型有一個特點: any more 既可以放在主句中, 也可以放在子句中:

  1. Rachel isn’t courageous, any more than Saul(is)
  2. He cannot effect the impossible, any more than we are.
    他跟我們一樣都不能做不可能的事。
  3. There is no solution in Cyprus that will meet everybody’s requirements, any more than there is in Ulster.

any way 是什麼意思, 是什麼句法成分?

答：any way 在句子裡作副詞修飾詞, 也可以寫作in any way 。其意義為: 以任何方法或以某種方法(by any method) 。in any way 有時候也作“在任何方面”、“在某個方面”、“無論如何”解:

  1. Can I help you in any way?
    我可以在哪個方面幫助你嗎? (我能幫點兒忙嗎?)
  2. You didn’t get hurt in any way?
    你沒有在哪個方面受到傷害吧?
  3. They won’t in any way finish it.
    他們無論如何也幹不完。
