in case (如果, 萬一) 引出條件子句時, 一般是指將來時間(儘管動詞時態是簡單現在式) 或過去將來時間, 而if 引出的條件子句可以指任何時間(現在、過去、將來) 。
- In case I forget, please remind me about it. 如果我忘了, 請提醒我一下。
- In case the home burns down, we’ll get the insurance money. 如果房子被燒毀, 我們將領到保險金。
- …police patrolled the streets in case anyone tired to leave the shelters too soon. 試圖過早地離開防空洞。
下面兩個句子最能說明in case 與if 的區別:
(a) I’m taking an umbrella in case it rains later on. 我拿著一把傘, 以防一會兒下雨。
(b) I’ll take an umbrella if it rains later on. 要是一會兒下雨, 我就拿一把傘。
在句(a) 中“我現在拿著一把傘”已成為事實, 而不管天晴, 還是下雨。而在句(b)中“我是否拿傘”決定於“ 過一會兒是否下雨”。
