everyone 用法, everyone vs every one哪一個是正確？

everyone 用法1 (everyone…their)

問：1. Everyone was in their room when the bell rang. (攻讀碩士學位研究生入學英語試題, 80 B)
2. Everyone is somewhat touchy about their home and personal property, they are too private to be exposed to the inspection of strangers. (《英語考試題典》, 吉林科技出版社, p.455)
上面兩道有關everyone 用法的試題要求將their 改為his。我認為, 這裡用their 並沒有什麼錯誤。

答：正像語言學家們所指出的, everyone 具有整體意義, 因此與之有關的代名詞可採用複數形式:

1. Everyone thinks they have a right to be here. 所有的人都認為他們有權在這裡。
2. Everyone has arrived, haven’t they? 大家都來了, 不是嗎? / 大家都到齊了, 對吧?
3. Everyone has their own ideas about it. 關於這件事每個人都有自己的想法。

everyone 用法 2 (everyone vs every one 1)

問：《大學英語· 精讀》第二冊(上海外語教育出版社, p.58) 有這樣一道練習題(用括弧中所給詞的適當形式填空) :
His ________ (surprise) recovery delighted everyone of us.
請問everyone of us 的用法是否正確?

答：everyone of us 的用法是錯誤的。F.T. Wood 指出:“Even for people two words must be used when the sense is‘every single one’.”LDCE 則進一步指出: Everyone(or everybody) can only be used of people and is never followed by‘of’.”由此看出, 從語意上說, 當指“每一單個的人”時, 必須使用every one; 從慣用法說, everyone 之後絕不可以跟“of”, 而必須使用every one of 的結構。請注意下面例句中的every one of 結構:

1. Every one of them was mud-stained. 他們個個都是滿身粘著泥。
2. Every one of the girls received a magnificent prize. 這些女孩全都得到了豐厚的獎品。

請注意下面各例中的everyone 用法只能指人, 並且不能與of 結構連用:

1. Everyone thinks they have a right to be here. 每個人都認為自己有權在這裡。
2. Everyone over eighteen now has a vote. 現在凡18 歲以上的人都有選舉權。
3. Everyone laughed, me include. 大家都笑了, 包括我在內。

everyone 用法 3 (everyone vs every one 2)

問：He has a lot of books, everyone of which are read through and marked from front to back.
給的答案要求將are 改為is。這無疑是正確的。但我認為試題本身有錯誤: everyone 應改為every one。不知您是否同意我的看法。

答：我完全同意你的看法。F.T. Wood 在Current English Usage 中明確指出:“The compound everyone can be used only to refer to people. For things, two words (every one) are necessary(複合詞everyone 只能用於指人, 指物時, 必須使用兩個詞every one) :

She bought a dozen eggs, and every one was bad.”
