問：在nobody but he 與nobody but him 兩種結構之中, 一個使用主格(he), 一個使用受格(him) 。請問哪種用法是正確的?
答： 這兩種結構並存的局面, 是由於人們對but 的詞性存在著不同看法造成的。有的人認為but 是個連接詞, 所以在but 之後使用主格nobody but I/he/she ; 另一些人則認為but 是個介係詞, 所以在but 之後使用受格:
- No man but I/me saw him. 除了我, 沒有人看到他。
- Nobody but she/her can solve our problem.除了她, 誰也不能解決我們的問題。
- They are all wrong but he/him. 除了他, 他們都錯了。
看來, 在but 之後究竟是用主格, 還是用受格, 並沒有一個明確、嚴格的標準。但是, 在傳統文法學家之中有一種傾向: but 位於主詞區(動詞前的主詞部分) 時, but 之後用主格, but 位於受詞區(動詞前主詞部分以外的部分) 時, but 之後用受格:
- Nobody can solve our problems but her.(CGEL) 除了她, 誰也解決不了我們的問題。
- Nobody said anything but me.(CGEL) 除了我, 誰也沒說什麼。
應當指出, 當代名詞充當受詞時, 只有使用受格才是正確的。
I want nobody but him. 除了他, 我誰也不需要。
Nobody move
問：在Nobody move 這個句子裡, 為何主詞和動詞沒有一致關係?
答：祈使句一般是無主詞的, 如Be quiet! Shut up! Come in! 但是, 有時候祈使句中也會出現主詞。
- You take this chair. 你拿這把椅子。
- I don’t know what to say. Norah, you go. 我不知道說什麼。諾拉, 你去吧。
- You watch her”, the doctor said to his assistant. “你看護她”, 醫生對他的助手說。
在祈使句中也可以使用第三人稱做主詞:
- Everybody open this door. 諸位, 請打開這扇門。
- Nobody move. 誰也不許動。
- Someone open the window. 請哪位打開窗戶。
- No one open the window. 誰也不許打開窗戶。
