either的基本用法
問：(a) Do you like either of these?
(b) On either side of the river lie corn-fields.
就我掌握的英語知識而言，either 是:“兩者之中任一”(one or other of the two) 的意思。我的知識似乎與句(b) 相矛盾。
答：either 的第一個詞義是指“兩者之中任一”：
但是，當either 與side, end, hand, bank 連用時，它的含義則是“兩者之中每一” (each of the two) ：

託福考題規定選D。但是，下列句子該如何解釋呢？

答：在各類考試中應嚴格遵守文法一致的原則，因此上面的考題必須選D。但是, 有時人們按照概念一致的原則，在作主詞的either, neither 之後使用複數動詞，尤其是在口語中。
- Are either of you ta king lessons? 你們倆都上課嗎?
- Either/Neither of them are welcome. 他們倆都很受歡迎。/他們倆都不受歡迎。
- I sent cards to Maris and Margery but neither of t hem has/ have replied…我已給馬里斯和馬傑裡寄去了請帖, 但兩人都沒有回音⋯ ⋯
這種使用動詞複數的句子雖然常常出自名家手筆，但是現今的測試專家仍不承認其為正式用法。各類考生應特別注意這一點。
either與too的用法
問：Tom didn’t call the police, Brenda didn’t call _________.

標準答案規定選A。但為什麼不能選B 呢？又為什麼不能選C 呢？
答：副詞too 是斷定詞項，用於肯定句，不能用於否定句，而副詞either 是非斷定詞項，用於否定句。
- Her mother’s coming, too. / Her mother’s not coming either.
- “I like opera” – “I do too”. / “I don’t like opera.” – “I don’t either.”
- Ann will stay late and Barbara will too. Ann won’t eat much and Barbara won’t either.

問：Either Tim or his brothers _________ to shovel the snow.
請問這裡應當使用have 還是應當使用has？
答：關於either…or 與動詞一致的問題，可以記住以下原則：如果either…or 連接的兩個部分都是單數， 動詞用單數；如果兩個部分都是複數，動詞用複數。如果一個部分是單數，而另一個部分是複數，則採用接近原則：動詞的人稱和數取決於最靠近動詞的名詞或代名詞。因此上面的考題應當填have。
- Either my wife or I am going. 或者我妻子去，或者我去。
- Either your brakes or your eyesight is at fault. 或者你的刹車有毛病，或者你的視力有毛病。
- Either your eyesight or your brakes are at fault. 或者你的視力或者你的刹車有毛病。
