ago 用法(與before 有何區別？）

問：He told me that he had handed in his exercise book _______.
我認為選A(two days ago) 和選C(two days before) 都是正確的。不知您同意否?

答：ago 用法是個後置副詞, 放在表示時間的詞語之後: two years ago([從現在算起的]兩年前) 。ago 表示從現在算起的“⋯ ⋯ 以前”, 亦即使用ago 的時間參照點是“現在”。請注意: 在這種句型裡動詞要用過去式:

1. The treaty was signed three days ago at Bucharest.
   本條約是三天前在布加勒斯特簽訂的。
2. John left a few minutes ago.
   約翰幾分鐘前離開了。

two years before 則是指從某一個過去時間點算起的“兩年前”。因此, 使用before 的前提: 必須有一個過去間點作參照點(至少在心目中是如此) 。注意: 在這種句型裡, 動詞常常用過去完成式:

1. Last summer, I finally left the firms that I had joined eighteen years before.
   去年夏天, 我終於離開了在那裡工作了十八年的那家公司(過去的時間參照點是“去年夏天”,“十八年前”是指去年夏天的十八年前) 。
2. He said that he had seen her two days before.
   他說他兩天前見過她。(過去的時間參照點: He said)
