不懂這6個whether用法，別說你懂英文

whether用法1：

問：___________ we’ll go camping tomorrow depends on the weather.
A. If
B. Whether
C. That
D. Where
答案為B. Whether。能否選 A.If呢?

答：見有關if/whether的文章。

whether用法2：

問： He doesn’t know _______ to stay or not.
A. whether
B. if
C. either
D. if he will
有雜誌上有一篇文章說:“…學生看到 or not，立即可以決定用 whether，因為if通常不能與 or not連用。”。請問這種解釋對嗎?

答： 說選A而不能選B是正確的。但提出的理由是不恰富的。見有關if/whether文章, if…or not。

whether用法3：

問： Many principles of jet propulsion apply regardless of _ air or water is the fluid used.
A. what
B. that
C. whether
D. either
我認為選項D. either是正確的。不知對否?

答：不應當選D，而應當選C. whether。我們從 regardless of這個介係詞可以看出，其後要有一個名詞性子句來作它的受詞。既然是子句，那就要使用從屬連接詞 whether…or，而不能用對等連接詞 either…or。換言之，either…or不能引導子句。請看下面的實例：

1. You may either stand up or sit down.
   你可以站起來，也可以坐下。
2. They didn’t say whether it will rain or be sunny.
   他們沒有說天氣將是雨天還是晴天。

此外，還可把regardless of whether看作是一個固定用法(複合從屬速接詞)：
Regardless of whether or not he finds a job, he’s getting married.
不管他是否找到工作，他也要結婚的。

whether用法4：

問：Whether it be bird, fish or beast, the porpoise is intrigued with anything that is alive.
我不明白在上面句子裡焉什麼用it be,而不用it is。

whether用法5：

問： Efficient functioning depends on good design, careful attention to operating difficulties, and lubrication of rough spots, whether they be mechanical or personal.
睛問句中的 they be是否符合文法?

答：現在假設法有時可以用在讓步子句中。但只能用於非常正式的語體中。這時它並不表示假的意思或非真實性。

1. All magnets behave the same, whether they be large or small.
   所有的磁體，不論大小性質都一樣。
2. Whether she be right or wrong, she will have my unswerving support.
   不管她對還是錯,她都將得到我堅決的支持
3. After all, all living creatures live by feeding on something else, whether it be plant or animal. dead or alive.
   要知道，所有活著的動物都是靠吃別的東西來生存的，而不管這些東西是植物還是動物，是死的還是活的。
4. Whether he succeed or fail, it will not matter to me.
   無論他成功還是失敗，都和我沒有關係。

有時候也使用were型假設語氣：
Whether she were right or wrong, what is it to me?
她對還是錯·對我有什麼關係呢?

更常見的形式是使用一般現在式。除了體差别之外，现在假股法與一般现在式在意義上並沒有什麼區别。
