dare 用法 (He does not dare/ He dare not)

句(a) 中的does not dare answer 是否為does not dare to answer 之誤?

答：dare 如同need 一樣, 既可用作情態助動詞, 亦可用作一般動詞。用作情態助動詞時, 其用法如同can, may, must 一樣, 其一般現在式沒有詞形變化, 在構成疑問句和否定句時, 也不借助do。

1. If you dare speak to me like that, you will be sorry. 如果你敢這樣對我講話, 你將會後悔的。
2. She dare not say what she thinks. 她不敢說出她的想法。

用作一般動詞的dare 具有單數第三人稱、過去式、過去分詞和現在分詞的形式, 在構成疑問句和否定句時需要借助do, 而且在與動詞不定詞連用時, 還需要帶介副詞to:

1. He dares to behave like that in my house! 他竟敢在我家裡有如此的行為!
2. He does not dare to fight. 他不敢鬥爭。
3. He has never dared to say it. 他從不敢說出那件事。

如果動詞dare 永遠按照上述規則來使用的話, 那麼我們掌握住它的用法就方便得多了。下面的例句就不符合上面的規則, 但被認為是合乎文法的:

1. I don’t dare speak to him. 我不敢和他講話。
2. He dares speak loud. 他敢大聲說話。
3. Do we dare tell them the truth? 我們敢告訴他們真相嗎?
4. I daren’t (don’t dare / didn’t dare) quarrel with them.
   我不敢跟他們爭吵。
   我沒有敢跟他們爭吵。

從上面的例句可以看出, 人們把dare 當作一般動詞來使用, 但是沒有加上介副詞to。語言學家們把這種情況稱作助動詞用法和一般動詞用法的混合現象, 也就是說用作一般動詞的dare 是可以不帶to 的。所以, 你提出的句(a) 並非病句, 而是正確的句子。
根據語言學家們的調查, 講美式英語的人比講英式英語的人接受這種混合現象的比率高得多。但是, 用作情態助動詞的dare, 無論在美式英語還是在英式英語中, 都是不容許加介副詞to 的, 因此, 下列用法都是錯誤的:

答：只能選C(dared not), 其他答案都不符合文法。作為情態動詞的dare 如同其他情態動詞can, may, will, shall 一樣也有過去式形式, 即: dared.

1. She dared not answer. 她沒有敢回答。
2. I dared not quarrel with them. 我沒有敢和他們爭吵。

dared not 也可以改為didn’t dare :

I didn’t dare quarrel with them.
