all…not用法1：
問：Mr. Heikal feels that al of Egypt can be run like A1 Ahram. All of Egypt, however, is not run like A1 Ahram.
[原譯] 海卡爾先生認為，整個埃及都可以像《金字塔報》這樣來管理。可是整個埃及並不是像《金字塔報》那樣管理的。(書)
譯文忠實於原文嗎？
答：正像語言學家 Nickles (1974) 和 Kilpatrick (1984) 所指出的，all 的否定詞not 常常放在它的後面，而不是放在它的前面。有的語言學家指出，這種用法古已有之：
All that glitters is not gold. (Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice, 1597)
閃閃發光物未必盡黃金。
實際上，除all 之外，every, everything, everyone, both 也具有上述用法，此時，all (every, both 等等)…not 表示部分否定，而不是表示全部否定。但是，這種部分否定形式跟中國人的思路很不協調，稍不留意， 就會發生誤解，請看下面的實例：
- All the answers are not right. 答案並非全對。
- All forms of matter do not have the same properties. 不是一切形式的物質都具有相同的特性的。
- In a thermal power plant all the chemical energy of the fuel is not converted into heat. 在熱電站中，燃料的化學能並不全部都轉變成熱量。
- Every machine here is not produced in our plant. 這裡的機器不全是我廠的產品。
- Both of the substances do not dissolve in water. 這兩種物質並不都溶於水。
但是，要注意，all…not 這個結構本身是有歧義的，例如“All cats don’t like water.”這個句子既可理解為全部否定句，意思是“所有的貓都不喜歡水(= All cats dislike water.) ”; 也可理解為部分否定句， 意思是“並非所有的貓都喜歡水(= Not all cats like water.)”。因此，遇到這類句子，除分析上下文外，還要進行邏輯分析。拿上面的原譯文來看，“整個埃及並不是像《金字塔報》那樣來管理的”，是不合邏輯的，因為《金字塔報》是埃及的一部分。如此看來，只有把上例中的原文理解為部分否定句才是合理的。

all…not用法2：
問：All of the arrows didn’t hit the target.
這個句子是否只能譯為：並不是所有的箭都擊中了靶子。也就是說，all…not 這個格式是不是只能表示“部分否定”?
答：中國内地的英語著作無一例外地都把這種結構解釋為局部否定句。例如，雷馨先生在《英語分類句型》(商務印書館，1979 年) 中說：“all…用於否定結構時不是表示全部被否定，而只是表示其中的一部分被否定⋯⋯”並譯作“並非一切⋯⋯都是”(p.10) 。許孟雄教授在《英語難題400 則》) (北師大出版社，1993 年) 中也表述了上述觀點。
由於這一理論在外語界已根深蒂固，所以當人們遇到與此理論相矛盾的句子時，也無法擺脫這一理論的束縛，而常常採取違反邏輯的解釋。例如，有一位作者在解釋All the money in the world won’t make you happy then. 這個句子時說:“句子形式是‘局部否定’結構，而其含義卻是全部否定”。
實際上，正像S.C.Levison 和R. Quirk 等語言家們所指出的那樣，All As are not B這個句型是個歧義句型，既可解釋為局部否定句，也可解釋為全部否定句。也就是說，All As are not B 這一表層結構對應於兩個深層結構。因此，在沒有上下文的條件下，All of the arrows didn’t hit the target. 這個句子本身具有兩種完全不同的含義：(a) None of the arrows hit the target. (全部否定: 所有的箭都沒有射中靶子。) ；(b) Not all of the arrows hit the target.(局部否定: 並不是所有的箭都射中了靶子) 。同樣，下列句子也都具有兩種完全不同的含義：
1. All the children didn’t sleep.
(a) All the children failed to sleep. 或None of the children slept. 所有的孩子都沒有睡著。
(b) Not all the children slept. 並非所有的孩子都睡著了。
2. All cats don’t like water.
(a) All cats dislike water. 所有的貓都不喜歡水。
(b) Not all cats like water. 並非所有的貓都喜歡水。
3. Both of them are not students.
(a) Either of them is a student. 並非他們兩人都是(大) 學生, 他們兩人之中有一人是(大) 學生。
(b) Neither of them is a student. 他們兩人都不是(大) 學生。
如果按照中國内地英語著作將all…not 一律看作是部分否定的觀點，則翻譯下列句子時必定會發生誤譯：
- All civilized people can’t be cannibals. 並非所有文明人都是能吃人肉的。(應為：文明人是不可能吃人肉的) 。
- All the money in the world won’t make you happy then. 那時候並非世界上所有的錢財能夠使你幸福。(應為：那時候即使世界上所有的金錢都歸你，也不會使你幸福的。)
- Not all the water in rough rude sea can wash the balm off from an anointed king. 並非所有的洶湧澎湃的蒼海之水, 能夠洗掉神聖帝王頭上的芬芳。(應為：即使洶湧澎湃的蒼海之水, 也洗不掉神聖帝王頭上的芬芳。)
- All the riches in the world would not redeem it. 並非全世界所有的財富能補償它。(應為：即使全世界的所有財富也不能補償它。)
- When the tie comes, not all the angels in heaven shall save him. 時候一到，並非天上所有的天使都能拯救他。(應為： 時候一到, 即使天上所有的天使也拯救不了他。)
- …and not all his large estate in Derbyshire could then save him from having a more forbidding, disagreeable countenance…他擺起那麼一副討人厭的面孔, 並不是他在德比郡的所有財產都能挽救他的⋯⋯ (應為： ⋯⋯ 他在德比郡的所有財產也是挽救不了他的⋯⋯)
- All these various losses, great as they are, do not in any way contradict the law of conservation. 所有這些各種各樣的損失，儘管很大，但無論如何也不與能量守恆定律相矛盾。
非常奇怪的是，雖然中國内地的英語文法界片面地強調all…not 為部分否定句，但是在翻譯界卻常常把表示部分否定的句子譯為全部否定句。
(1) …She discovered that Drouet had been there. His umbrella and light overcoat were gone. She thought she missed other things, but could not be sure. Everything had not been taken.
[原譯] ⋯⋯她發現杜洛埃曾經來過。他的陽傘和薄大衣已經不見。她心裡以為還少了別的東西, 但是確不定。什麼都沒有拿去。(《嘉麗妹妹》)
(應譯為： ⋯⋯她發現杜洛埃曾經來過。他的陽傘和薄大衣已經不見。她心想是不是還少了別的東西。他什麼也沒拿。)
(2) Centres are not suitable for every job on the lathe. (The Structure of Technical English, p.20)
[原譯] 頂尖不適用於車床上的每一項加工任務。
（應為：頂尖並不適用車床上的所有加工任務。）
以上兩例的分析, 分別見all…not用法1, everything…not
all…not用法3：
問：We couldn’t eat in a restaurant because _______ of us had ______ money on us.
A. all; no
B. any; no
C. none; any
D. no one; any
標準答案為C, 但是, 我認為答案A 也是合乎文法的, 不知您的意見如何。
答：出題者之所以這樣出題, 顯然是把all…not (no) 看作只能用於部分否定的緣故。實際上, 這一結構也可以理解為全部否定: 因為我們大家身上都沒有帶錢(見all…not用法1) 。
